Laser Hair Removal In Encino: What To Expect Session By Session

Laser hair removal is one of the highest-satisfaction treatments in aesthetic medicine, and one of the most frequently done badly. The variables that determine whether you get permanent reduction or a wasted series are the device, the wavelength, the operator's settings, and your adherence to the schedule. Here is how it works and what a properly run series looks like at our Encino practice.

The Physics In Plain Language

Laser hair removal relies on selective photothermolysis. Laser light is preferentially absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft and follicle, converted to heat, and that heat damages the follicular stem cells responsible for regrowth. The target is pigment in the hair; the risk is pigment in the surrounding skin. That single tension explains everything about candidacy, wavelength selection and settings.

Hair grows in three phases — anagen (active growth), catagen (transition) and telogen (rest). Only anagen follicles have enough melanin concentrated at the bulb to be effectively destroyed, and at any given moment only twenty to thirty percent of hairs in an area are in anagen. This is the entire reason multiple sessions spaced weeks apart are required: each session catches a different cohort.

Why Wavelength Matters For Skin Tone

The Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm penetrates more deeply and is absorbed far less by epidermal melanin than shorter wavelengths such as alexandrite or diode. That makes it the safest option for Fitzpatrick types IV through VI — a significant consideration in a community as ethnically diverse as the San Fernando Valley, where patients with darker skin have historically been turned away or, worse, burned by providers using the wrong device. Our Fotona platform delivers Nd:YAG with contact cooling and adjustable pulse durations, allowing us to treat safely across the spectrum of skin tones.

How Many Sessions You Need

  • Face and neck: eight to twelve sessions, spaced four weeks apart — facial hair is hormonally influenced and the most stubborn.
  • Underarms and bikini: six to eight sessions, four to six weeks apart, with excellent response rates.
  • Legs and arms: six to eight sessions, six to eight weeks apart.
  • Back and chest: eight to ten sessions, with maintenance more often required in men.
  • Maintenance: most patients return once or twice a year afterward.

Coarse, dark hair responds best. Gray, white, red and very fine blonde hair contain insufficient melanin and will not respond meaningfully to any laser — we tell patients this before they pay for a package rather than after. Hormonal conditions such as PCOS require ongoing maintenance and often benefit from medical management alongside laser.

Before Your Appointment

  • Shave the area twelve to twenty-four hours before — do not wax, thread, pluck or use depilatory creams for four weeks, because the follicle must be present to be targeted.
  • Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for two weeks; a tan increases risk of burns and pigment change.
  • Discontinue retinoids in the treatment area for three to five days.
  • Disclose photosensitizing medications including certain antibiotics, isotretinoin use within six months, and any history of herpes simplex in the treatment area.
  • Arrive with clean skin — no deodorant, lotion or makeup on the area.

During And After

Sessions range from ten minutes for underarms to an hour for full legs. Most patients describe the sensation as a hot rubber band snap; contact cooling makes it very tolerable. Afterward, expect redness and perifollicular edema — small raised bumps around each follicle — for a few hours to a day. That reaction is actually a good sign of effective energy delivery. Use cool compresses, gentle moisturizer, and disciplined SPF. Avoid hot showers, sauna, hot yoga and strenuous exercise for twenty-four hours.

Around days seven to fourteen, treated hairs will appear to grow out and then shed. This is the shedding phase, not regrowth. Between sessions you may shave, but never wax or pluck.

The right question is not 'how much per session' — it is 'what wavelength, what settings, and who is holding the handpiece.'

Choosing A Provider In The Valley

Ask which device and wavelength they use and whether it is appropriate for your skin type. Ask who operates it and what their credentials are. Ask whether settings are individualized or fixed. A medical practice with physician direction, a proper Nd:YAG platform, and clinicians trained in treating all skin types will produce better results than a discount package at a facility that owns one device and treats everyone identically.
